This year, TEAM Abilities, an agency that serves adults with special needs, is offering the sounds of gladness and joy from their TEAM Christmas Choir.

Our Team Members have been practicing with great excitement in hopes that they will be able to entertain various businesses and schools in our community, said Rachel Jelks, Founder and CEO of TEAM Abilities. They sound great and you wont find a more grateful group!

Team Members, adults with special needs who reside in TEAM Abilities community living homes, have typically sung before groups in assisted living facilities in the Spring/Woodlands area, but this year decided to present themselves as holiday entertainment for area businesses and schools.

They will entertain for half an hour and they offer their services on a love donation basis. All funds received are split between the Team Members, said Jelks. They will then use those well-earned funds to buy Christmas gifts and other items they might want.

TEAM is an acronym for Together Everyone Achieves More and TEAM Abilities has been serving the Montgomery and Harris counties for 14 years specializing in the IDD community. They take all levels of need and all levels of support as they serve adults with special needs through ISS / day habilitation and community living homes.

The stats are staggering with no end in sight. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 1 in 36 children in the United States have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) which is more than four times the rate back in 2000. At least 1 in 59 children has one or several learning disabilities. 20% of children in the U.S. have learning and thinking differences such as ADHD and 4 million children younger than 18 have learning disabilities. In fact, 15% of public school students received special education and/or related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

So the question is, what happens?

What happens to children who age out of high school? What happens to young adults with special needs who are not college bound? What happens to adults with special needs who rely on their aging parents for their total care? Moreover, what happens when those parents pass on. Who will care for adults with special needs when there is no longer a family member who can care for them?

As parents search for the answers to these all-important questions, the challenge of types of care and services quickly comes to the fore. Where do parents go for help? What types of services are available? Is their financial assistance to help parents pay for these services?

The good news is that under Home and Community-Based Services-Adult Mental Health (HCS) there is a waiver program that provides home and community-based services to adults with disabilities. The bad news is, the waiting list to receive such services is an estimated 18-20 years. Thats right, one nearly has to register their child for services in kindergarten to possibly receive services when they age out of high school.

The demand for services is only growing, said Rachel Jelks, Founder & CEO of TEAM Abilities, an agency that provides services to adults with special needs through ISS/Day Habilitation and Community Living care. And while parents are waiting on services what are they supposed to do? Many parents have to quit their jobs to stay at home with their adult child. The need is desperate for interim and long-term care.

The gap is so wide and vast that Jelks is hosting a conference with other leaders in the IDD Community so parents, professionals and educators can learn more about available services.

There are numerous enclave services that can assist parents while in the gap of waiting for more advanced, long-term solutions, said Jelks. There are solutions, services and programs available and we need to start connecting the dots for our families, educators and professionals in our county.

The conference, Connecting the Dots and Filling in the Gaps, is set for Saturday, October 26, 9am to 2pm, and is provided free-of-charge to parents, educators and professionals in the Montgomery county and surrounding area.

The conference is a symposium for solutions with expert speakers and panelists that can engage one-on-one with attendees, said Jelks. This is our way of bringing everyone together in the same room to share experiences, challenges, results and possibilities.

Notable speakers will be Nikole Crowder, Prof Speaker Ed/Parent Liaison Special Education/CISD; Gayle Y. Fisher, M.Ed., Ed.Tech./ Empowering the World of Learning Differences / Neurodiversity; Armando J. Bernal, M.Ed., BCBA, LBA, Founder, Autism International Consulting, PLLC; Kelly Baughman, Executive Director Co-Founder, Project Beacon and Connie Baker, M-ED Founder, Advocacy Aid LLC. There will also be materials on hand provided by the Time to Care Coalition.

The event is free and lunch will be provided to all attendees. For more information, go to www.eventbrite.com/e/connecting-the-dots-tickets-1042317809627?aff=oddtdtcreator or call Donna Wick at 832-790-2879.

Financial analysts have indicated that there is a financial epidemic in America today. Most Americans are stressed to max and budgets are stretch beyond means. Fact is, people are struggling just to get by. People need hope and people need guidance. Fortunately, the upcoming Financial Empowerment Conference will offer both to those who attend, free of charge, with lunch provided.

All it takes is a quick trip to the grocery store or filling up ones gas tank to know that we are living in different times, offers Rachel Marie Jelks, founder of sparkle events with Rachel Marie. Used to be that $100 worth of groceries would fill up your trunk. Now $100 worth of groceries are but a few bags you put in the front seat!

Esteemed financial experts will be on hand to quite simply talk about how money works. Attendees will learn how to save, budget and invest, as well as how to build credit, how to buy a home or invest in real estate and how to leverage small business revenues to absolute freedom.

We may not have all the answers, but we are offering a way for people to see their financial situation differently and make some headway that will give them a sense of hope, Jelks said. We are also offering free headshots to attendees so they may update their social media accounts and resumes.

Jelks will also be sharing her personal story of starting and failing in a few businesses, but then with $1,000 began again and today her enterprise earns in excess of $5M annually. She says the difference between her and others is that she didnt take no for an answer and simply began again! Jelks hopes by sharing her story attendees will become inspired to master the helm of their financial future.

The Financial Empowerment conference will be held on Saturday, October 5, 10am 2pm at TEAM Abilities located at 611 Westridge Drive in The Woodlands. The event is being hosted by sparkle events and St. Paul Community Church of Spring. The conference is free, lunch will be provided and attendees can take a free headshot.

I want people to know that this event is for the benefit of all. There are no additional costs attendees will have to pay, said Jelks. We just want to do our part to offer some solutions to those searching for answers.

Houston, TX (EMAILWIRE) -- This fall, Houston is poised to become the epicenter of creative innovation as Modern Muse: Houstons Women in Art takes the spotlight on November 2, 2024. Hosted at The Assembly, Third Ward from 1 to 6 pm, the exhibition will unite the citys two most promising female artists for a vibrant mélange of creativity, innovation and passion.

Modern Muse is set to redefine Houstons art scene, inviting attendees into a world where traditional mediums blend with cutting-edge technology, offering fresh perspectives on contemporary art. From powerful paintings to mesmerizing digital creations, this event will present pieces that challenge, inspire, and provoke thought.

A Showcase of Trailblazing Talent

The two remarkable artists at the heart of Modern Muse are Dr. Stacey Denise Moore and Ashley Simmons. Their pieces push the edges of creativity and unfurl deeply intimate stories. Together, they embody the spirit of empowerment, creativity, and transformation.

Dr. Stacey Denise Moore, a former pediatric surgeon turned neuroaesthetic designer, leads the way with her emotionally resonant artworks. Inspired by her experience with alexithymia, a condition that limits her ability to express emotions verbally, Dr. Stacey transforms complex feelings into vibrant visual narratives. Using digital tools like Adobe Photoshop and generative AI, her works invite viewers to explore the intersection of emotion, technology, and art. Dr. Stacey is also the founder, CEO, Principal Artist, and Interior Designer at Ceyise Studios. Her interiors transcend mere spaces, reflecting her artistic vision through customized designs.

Ashley Simmons, a dynamic mixed-media artist, is equally compelling, offering works that are as raw as they are refined. Her bold, multi-layered creations explore themes of self-growth and transformation, drawing inspiration from literary and artistic icons such as W.E.B. Du Bois, James Baldwin, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Using vibrant colors, textures, and an array of techniques, her work is a visceral expression of personal and collective evolution, inviting viewers to experience the power of renewal firsthand.

Art Talks to Ignite Passion and Drive Creativity

The opening reception will invite guests to meet the artists, explore their works, and engage directly with them through live talks, gaining insight into their creative processes and personal journeys. This interactive component offers a deeper connection between the audience and the art, fostering an inclusive atmosphere for conversation and reflection.

Modern Muse is a celebration of the exceptional talent emerging from Houstons vibrant art scene, said Dr. Stacey. We aim to create an environment where these artists can share their voices and where the community can experience the transformative power of contemporary art.

Alongside the inspiring works, guests will enjoy curated bites and fine wines provided by Over Board Event Planners, HTX. Attendees would also have an opportunity to take home rare merchandise from the artists.

TEAM Abilities, a local agency serving adults with special needs, is hosting a Career Fair & Ice Cream Sundae Bar as they look to hire for several positions proving a great opportunity for job-seekers to move into a recession-proof industry.

"In this day there is so much uncertainty, but the healthcare profession will always remain a constant in today's society," Rachel Jelks said, Founder & CEO of TEAM Abilities. "We can provide training and instant access into the field of healthcare with no experience needed."

Positions available range from Direct Care, Housekeeping, Appointment Runners, Transportation, Care Coordinators, Instructors and Handymen. Training is provided for all positions and employees are paid weekly.

The way Jelks puts it, she would rather hire someone with a lot of heart and little experience saying, "You can always train someone on how to do certain procedures, but you cannot train someone on how to care."

Even as solid as the healthcare field is, TEAM Abilities is just as solid having recently celebrated its 14th anniversary in Montgomery County. The agency has 20 Community Living homes, as well as an active ISS day habilitation program.

"We have been serving the tri-county area for some time and we are here to stay," Jelks said. "We are a faith-based, family-owned business and our entire family has grown up here in Montgomery County. This is our home and home to our Team Members who have chosen TEAM Abilities as their provider."

For more information on the Career Fair & Ice Cream Sundae Bar experience, call Donna Wick at 832-790-2879. The event will be held at the TEAM Abilities ISS day habilitation building on Saturday, September 21, 10am-1pm, located at 611 Westridge Drive in Spring.

Recovering After Hurricane Beryl: A Guide for Houston Homeowners

Hurricane Beryl has passed, but its aftermath has left many Houston homes grappling with water damage. Knowing what to do next can make a significant difference in safeguarding your property and securing your insurance claims.

At Elements of Restoration, were here to guide you through every step of the process. Heres what you need to know about handling water damage after a hurricane and when its time to call in professional restoration services.

Immediate Steps to Take After the Storm

1. Ensure Safety First

Before inspecting your home, ensure its safe to do so. Look for:

Structural Damage: Check for signs of structural instability like sagging roofs, cracked walls, or leaning foundations.

Flooded Areas: Avoid entering flooded spaces until theyre deemed safe. Floodwaters can contain contaminants and pose electrical hazards.

Downed Power Lines: Stay clear of downed power lines and report them to your utility company immediately.

2. Document the Damage

Accurate documentation is crucial for insurance claims. Heres how:

Photos and Videos: Take comprehensive photos and videos of all damaged areas, both inside and out.

Inventory List: Create a detailed list of damaged items, noting their approximate value.

Save Receipts: Keep receipts for any temporary repairs or emergency accommodations.

3. Contact Your Insurance Company

Notify your insurance company as soon as possible. Provide them with your documentation and follow their procedures for filing a claim. Keep a record of all communications.

4. Perform Temporary Repairs

Prevent further damage by making temporary repairs such as:

Tarping Roofs: Cover holes or leaks in your roof to prevent additional water ingress.

Boarding Windows: Secure broken windows to protect your home from further weather damage and security risks.

Removing Water: Begin water removal and drying of affected areas. For significant flooding, consider professional help.

When to Call a Restoration Company

While minor issues can be handled personally, extensive damage requires professional intervention. Heres when to call Elements of Restoration:

Significant Water Damage: If your home has substantial water damage, such as flooded basements or soaked walls and floors, professional water extraction and drying are crucial.

Mold Growth: Mold can develop rapidly in moist environments. If you notice mold, immediate professional remediation is essential to prevent health risks.

Structural Damage: For any structural damage, such as compromised foundations or collapsed walls, professional repairs are necessary to ensure safety and stability.

Complex Insurance Claims: Navigating insurance claims can be overwhelming. Our team can work directly with your insurance company to ensure you receive fair compensation and streamline the process.
